Google Home setup
Guide to blink the LEDs via Google Home#
Please don’t forget to remove the device after you finish the setup and playing with the LED! Pretty please :)
Step-by-step guide#
- Share your Google e-mail address (the one used with your Android device) with our lovely assistant, so he can invite you to his Google Home. Best is to email your email address to him using matteresv@gmail.com as the recipient and Subject: Matter. If you are concerned about this step, I recommend reading Why E-mail? for more details.
Or if you don’t want to go down this route, either choose Home Assistant option, or use the dev version Google Home Sample Apps for Matter . This last option is not detailed in this guide, but it is quite similar and easy. This app is not signed, so you might enable unsigned APKs from the Android developer options.
- Accept the Home invite share.

Google will also ask you to share a bunch of data. I recommend choosing “No thanks.”

-
In case you are not yet connected, connect to my Wi-Fi network - scan the Wi-Fi QR code, or use SSID: Matter_Raspi_LED, password: CUJO.AI!
-
Pick a station number that is not currently used by anyone else. Touch the chosen station number on the touchscreen.

This will put the Matter device into factory reset/commissioning mode.
-
Use the Google Home app to scan the Matter QR code with the matching station number from your Android device.
-
Use your Google Home app to start the device pairing process, and follow the screenshots. Defaults are fine, but you can be creative if you want.
You can name the device anything you want, just please, be mindful and stay compliant with the DEF CON code of conduct.

- Now you can control the Raspi LED from your Android device! How cool is that? And what is even cooler? You can control the same device from another ecosystem as well - in this case, Home Assistant or Apple!
Bonus points for controlling the LED from your Android Smart Watch :D
Other bonus points for controlling the LED from the Google Nest hub.
Extra bonus points for using voice control with the Google Nest Hub. “OK Google, turn… device on!”
Before you leave …#
- Once you finish playing with the device, please remember to clean up. Remove the accessory from the Google Home and leave this specific Google Home so others can join.

Side note: If you think, “Hey, I can control your Google Home Hub as well!” The answer is yes, you can. Pretty please, don’t. Thank you.
