Discover how you can control IoT devices from any ecosystem#

The main goal of this booth is to introduce you to Matter, the “open-source, royalty-free smart home connectivity standard.”

As a hacker with 20+ years of experience, my IoT recommendation in the past was to avoid IoT devices unless you build them yourself. There were serious security, privacy, and/or stability issues with IoT devices in the past. But finally, there is Matter worth considering. Control your home IoT devices in an open, secure, private, cross-platform way, or even build your own IoT!

We have designed six ways for you to discover and play with the Matter technology:

Cool :-) You can do this at home by visiting this guide from Canonical . You can use more recent Ubuntu versions—you do not have to stick with the old ones recommended in the post.

For the full Matter experience, you might need a Thread Border Router to support Thread devices as well:

Apple: Apple TV 4K latest gen (with Ethernet and Thread support), or an Apple HomePod (latest gen)

Google: Google Nest Hub (2nd gen), Google Nest Hub Max, or Google WiFi Pro

  1. Who else supports Matter? Practically everyone who matters. Samsung, Amazon, Arduino, IKEA, Bosch, EVE, Nanoleaf, Infineon, Silicon Labs, Espressif, Huawei, LG, Nordic, NXP, STM, and over 600 other companies. See the list of companies involved here .

  2. What is the goal of this Matter demo?

For years, IoT was a “joke” when it came to security and how the hacker community perceived it. I would like to change this view by showing that IoT can be secure, private, and open-source. Whether you want to buy something that just works or build your devices yourself, Matter is here to help.

  2. Can I commission the LED into multiple ecosystems at the same time?

Yes. Check the device settings in the current ecosystem. Find an action called “turn on pairing mode” (Apple), “linked matter apps and services” (Google), or “share device” (Home Assistant), or use “chip-tool pairing open-commissioning-window 110 1 400 2000 3840” in Linux and search for the line “Manual pairing code”.
